Burned Mind
Sub Pop

Imagine the screaming sound of bodies being sawed in half -- or don't -- and then replay the soundtrack to your worst nightmare in a crackling, digital loop. Twist the knob to 11. Set off every car alarm in town. And while you're at it, drench the cat in water and wait for the bloodcurdling yowl. Sound intense? Not hardly. You aren't even close to imagining the sinister evil that is Burned Mind, the 50th-odd Wolf Eyes album to date, but only the third to find its way into the marketplace. And for that, you can be thankful. A bit more obvious than Black Dice, and a gaping stretch less inventive than Throbbing Gristle, Burned Mind is the product of three tireless, experimental noisemakers from Ann Arbor, Mich., who first gained a small bit of fame after snagging the opening slot during Sonic Youth's Sonic Nurse tour. How they landed on Sub Pop is open to speculation, but with song titles like "Dead in a Boat" and "Stabbed in the Face," one could make an educated guess: This is a 45-minute joke. Or not.
