It's Been a Long, Cold, Lonely Winter

Summary: Baby, it's warm outside! Reporter: Alison Morris, KDKA Channel 2 Airtime: 2 minutes, 17 seconds on April 2 Highlights: * When anchor Stacy Smith trumpets, "It does not get much better than this. Pittsburghers are taking advantage of the summer-like weather. All day, they have been heading outside to soak up the sunshine. Good afternoon. The 80-degree weather continues!" * When Patrice King Brown belabors the point: "And, after the winter we had, this sunshine and warm temperatures are definitely welcome." * When Morris astutely adds, "It's amazing how happy everybody looks when the sun comes out. So warm out today that I'm in a shady spot trying to keep cool. Check out the crowd here on the patio of the Double Wide Grill." * When we jump to another part of town, for Morris' prerecorded segment: "When the weather gets warm in the summer, there's one place Pittsburghers always go -- Gus and YaYa's on the North Side." * When proprietor Gus says, "We've been here 76 years, and I've been here 59 on my own." * When a woman speaks of her 40-year tradition with the ice-ball vendor: "[W]e bring our kids from Louisiana here, from California, from Chicago." You are breaking my heart here, lady! You let them leave Pittsburgh??? * When another customer reveals how he goes to the cart without his significant other: "Sometimes, I'll sneak here without her. That's the best part. I tell Gus, 'Don't say anything.'" * When we go back to the South Side, where Morris is stationed: "A much newer tradition out the South Side: the patio, at the Double Wide Grill on East Carson Street." * When the Double Wide's manager reports, "11 o'clock [a.m.] we were full ... been on a wait every single night for the last four or five days since we've been open." * When Morris concludes, "[This] isn't the only place that's been jumping today. Crowded everywhere because of the warm weather. We were at Schenley Park earlier today, where there were crowds as well." What We Learned: People go outdoors when it's warm and dry. What a revelation! Unanswered Question: Wouldn't it be fun if it snowed just one more time, so we could see the local TV newspeople in a frenzy again? News Value: 1. Sure, everybody looks happy, but are they really? Anyway, let's hear it for the independent local operator!
