Imagine a king who controls an empire stretching from the northern borders of Scotland to the southern borders of France, but has absolutely no control over his own family. With an imprisoned wife, an eager mistress and three sons battling for the throne, King Henry II of England proves that dysfunctional families were every bit as prevalent in the twelfth century as they are today.
