The Hangover Part II

Another bachelor party ends in a blackout in this comedy sequel

I have a grudging admiration for the team behind The Hangover Part II, who clearly didn't give a rat's ass that they were simply re-making The Hangover, with the thinnest veneer of "different." Director Todd Phillips simply re-assembles the same "wolf pack" (Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis), and sends them out on a bachelor party, whereby they lose their minds and the bride's teen-age brother. They gain: a tattoo, a monkey and the re-acquaintance of manic gangster Mr. Chow (Ken Jeong). But instead of Vegas, the lads are wandering the sleazy sections of Bangkok, Thailand.

Thus, if you loved Hangover I, you'll likely enjoy Part II. What it lacks in originality, I suppose, it makes up for with even more male nudity. I laughed here and there, even though I saw some of the biggest jokes coming miles away. But what was fresh about the backward-through-booze-blackout format the first time felt pretty rote.

Helms pouts and shrieks; Galifianakis pouts and does his deadpan dummy thing; and Cooper brings the (pretty grimy) eye candy. Frankly, Mr. Chow and monkey steal the film. (They have a scene together you won't soon forget.) If there must be a Hangover Part III, I at least hope it's Mr. Chow's wedding.
