Tenacious D: The Pick Of Destiny

If there had been never been a Spinal Tap, VH-1's Behind the Music, the Tenacious D TV series or a School of Rock, this rock-yer-balls-off musical comedy and fake-band bio might have seemed fresh and funny. Instead, Jack Black and Kyle Gass, front men for the over-the-top, so-bad-they're-at-least-entertaining acoustic metal act Tenacious D, feel years out of date. They make guitar faces, power-riff, swear by Dio, and take a short road trip in search of a magical guitar pick. Cameos from Ben Stiller, Tim Robbins and real-life shredder Dave Grohl do little liven the party. When Black made School of Rock, he brought his earnest heart to rock fandom. Here, the whole self-congratulatory fart-and-sniff snarkiness is executed so lazily and with so much tongue in cheek that it was simple for me to take a cue from the pair and not care either. (AH)
