Dormont's Potomac Avenue has a bright, new addition -- Sugar Café. Walk inside and you'll see a sign that instructs: "Keep calm and eat more cupcakes."
But if you care to start with something slightly more savory, Sugar Café's breakfast offerings include buttermilk waffles with maple syrup, raspberry jam and vanilla crème fraiche, as well as cinnamon French toast with caramelized bananas and toasted pecans. For lunch, try roasted eggplant on ciabatta with parmesan cheese, or a loaded spinach salad with warm bacon dressing.
As its name implies, Sugar Café is really about the sweet. The venue, which is also a bakery, offers a variety of sweets made in house daily. These range from such morning staples as muffins and danishes to indulgences including crème brûlée, cheesecake, cupcakes and cream puffs. On the day I visited, deep-dish blueberry cheesecake and Irish car-bomb cupcakes were featured.
The cheesecake, while monstrous in size, had a light and airy texture which was complemented by tart, plump blueberries. The crumbly, buttery tidbits on top were reminiscent of a cobbler topping and rounded out each bite perfectly. But the highlight for me was a chocolate-chip cookie -- a flat, buttery disc that oozed chocolate and felt like it had just come from the oven.
Sugar Café also offers coffees and teas, and plenty of places to sit and enjoy a snack. With its bright-blue walls and friendly staff, it's definitely a place to be calm, and eat more cupcakes.
