Soil | Kelly-Strayhorn Theater | Dance | Pittsburgh City Paper

When: Fri., March 9, 8 p.m. and Sat., March 10, 8 p.m. 2018

Soil is an intercultural dance-theater piece, conceived and directed by Michael Sakamoto, which highlights distinct traditional differences between cultures. The hour-long work, staged at the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater, includes three co-creators and performers: Vietnamese-American dancer Nguyen Nguyen, Thai traditional and contemporary dancer Waewdao Sirisook, and Cambodian classical and contemporary dancer Chey Chankethya. In an age where the intermingling of races and ethnicities is increasingly common, Soil explores identity, and asks the question: “Who am I?” By remixing and reimagining traditional dance, the work seeks to expose the audience to the everyday life of a global citizen. -LO
