At best it is unethical to charge a ticket starting at $33.00 to attend the Pride in the Street concert on a public street. Excluding the citizenry from their own street unless they pay a private non-profit is simply wrong and unfair. Pay to play or you can not be on a tax payer funded public street. For several years now IATSE Local 3 has been trying to meet with the Delta Foundation to discuss having the Delta Foundation consider using Union Stagehands at the Pride in the Street concert. Aside from a brief initial meeting in 2012, IATSE has made several requests to meet with Delta, but those requests have gone unanswered. IATSE has not been given the chance to even discuss with Delta the benefits of using union labor for the Pride in the Street concert. We think that is simply unfair, and these actions lead us to leaflet the public Sunday, June 14th.
We want to get the word out that this issue is ongoing, so we walked around the parade route and through out the public streets in the Cultural district on Sunday and distributed informational leaflets to the public. We need to let the community know that union labor is being shut out of one of the biggest annual events in Pittsburgh considering the size and scale of the event, top dollar performing artists, and the cost of admission tickets, while at the same time taking no action to ensure that stagehands are included.

We believe there is a reasonable expectation to not be ignored by the Delta Foundation for the past 4 years. IATSE as a Labor organization were early innovators in the movement in ensuring protections for LGBT workers in their industry, at a time when this was not yet widely accepted in the Labor movement. IATSE nationally has been a consistent voice for LGBT equality.

In the absence of comprehensive anti discrimination protection under the law, the best protection against discrimination available to LGBT workers is through a union. Additionally we know that the majority of the LGBT community are workers and a union provides LGBT workers the most effective path to economic security. The most successful regions welcome all kinds of people, as Richard Florida stated in the Rise of the Creative Class and we say the Creative Class is the Working Class!
