Sail into Little Italy Days with the sounds of yacht, smooth jazz, and fusion

Tonight, Little Italy Days kicks off in Bloomfield. To help get festival-goers in the mood, DJ Paul Seif and DJ Marie are ransacking their vinyl collections to play the sweet sounds of yacht rock, smooth jazz, and fusion at Station.

"Expect a heavy helping of Steely Dan, Hall & Oates, Michael McDonald, and George Benson," reads the Facebook event. "Sure, and since this is Bloomfield Little Italy Days, yinz' can expect the Italyinz' to be fully represented."

Staying with the Italian theme, also available will be a special menu of Italian craft cocktails designed by Taylor J Ciarallo and featuring Averna and Aperol.

The pair plans to play records from those who have provided sources for sample-based music through the generations, from Prince Paul to RZA, J Dilla, and more. Notably, yacht rock, smooth jazz, and fusion have been the choice of music to pull samples from in both the hip hop and house genres. Kanye West uses Steely Dan's song "Kid Charlemagne" in his own "Champion," on Graduation. Common's "I Used to Love H.E.R." sampled George Benson's "The Changing World." Thundercat borrowed the sounds of Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins for "Show You The Way."

"You already love Yacht, Smooth Jazz & Fusion," reads the event page, "even if you didn't already know it."

Breezin' Yacht, Smooth Jazz & Fusion - Little Italy Days Edition. Thu., Aug. 15. 9 p.m. Station, 4744 Liberty Ave., Bloomfield.
