I think that another issue in this article, as people are starting to bring up, is this idea that teachers are failing students. It was even directly mentioned in one of the quotes. No mention was given to the Common Core nonsense, the "teach to the test" mentality that now pervades education in this country, or the idea that teachers often can't just "engag[e]... them [students] in the type of active learning that could take place" because they are simply not ALLOWED to. This is not the fault of the teachers but the fault of the Department of Education and the intermediaries that enforce the mandates blindly. I completely agree that injustice is likely being committed toward African-American males in regards to the Pittsburgh Promise program, but throwing teachers under the bus by citing them as a main cause not only does THEM a huge injustice, but is an egregious error.
