they write the poems of pretty
girls in good sun, stealing the world from pain
they say they can't swallow
come for cash or handfuls of fingernails
because they are a peach
and a remembered piano
and we want this more
than anything they have --
to be them the ones
with loving daddies,
no safety pins in their bras,
no yellow stains under their arms, damn
those girls never over-ripen,
they just fall not far from the tree
and the shade colors their curls
as we cut our skin.
we danced in the sun
but we were too poor to remember
a piano. a peach.
diamonds in their piss. we swallowed
why are they trying to sing it for us?
