Fans of Franktuary now have another location besides a Downtown church to praise their love of wieners: the roving Franktuary truck.
The vehicle sets up Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. in the parking lot of the Hot Metal Bridge Faith Community at South 27th and Jane streets, in the South Side.
It also makes appearances at other events around town, such as a fundraiser in the Strip District or the set of a zombie flick in Fineview. (The truck can also be requested for school functions, weddings or other events.)
The truck features Franktuary's organic, grass-fed beef frank, the regular beef frank, a tofu vegan dog and a "carrot dog," which is a big carrot marinated in "hot dog spices."
Diners can also order two specialty dogs available only on the truck. The "Oahu" is topped with sweet grilled pineapple, teriyaki sauce, bacon and green onions. The "Brasil" features bacon, mashed potatoes, tomato-corn relish and potato chips. You can also get poutine, a Canadian dish of French fries topped with vegan gravy and cheese curds from Lawrenceville-based Arsenal Cheese.
"The difference is the environment. It feels special," says Sarah Vantassel, who was working the truck with Nora Housler when City Paper visited. And, at the Hot Metal site, diners can eat outside on the church's patio.
Housler and Vantassel say the truck (which takes cash and credit cards) will be out until the weather turns cold. Track the truck at its latest location at www.twitter.com/Franktuary.
