Why the 2009 Pittsburgh Pirates Will Suck
... It's boring to just preview a team and predict their finish (boring/too hard), we do things a little differently here. It's much more interesting (easy) to simply examine why they currently suck and are going to suck in 2009.
Up this week is the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Sucky Offseason Moves
The only laudable move the Pirates made was selecting Donald Veal from the Cubs in the Rule V draft. Veal is highly unlikely to contribute anything but additional suck to the Pirates this year, but if he can get his control back, he's got the stuff to have a successful future in the pen, or even as a starter on a team like the Pirates. If the Pirates can manage to keep him on the 25-man roster all season, they may suck just a fractional bit less in 2010 and beyond for having snagged him.
And in the End
They suck. The Pirates did get very nice seasons last year from lefty Paul Maholm, catcher Ryan Doumit and center fielder Nate McLouth. And they did a good job to lock the three up (albeit while they were still under control anyway) for the next three years. It's a nice core, but it's not enough.
Let's face it. This is a rebuilding team. It is a team that, unfortunately, should have started rebuilding some time ago ...
... The 2009 Pirates will ... blow.
