Morgan Contemporary Glass Gallery announced plans to permanently close in October 2019 after 22 years in Shadyside.

In an official statement, gallery owner and director Amy Morgan said, "To the artists who have shown with me, the young people who have worked with me, and the collectors who found art to acquire in the gallery, it couldn't have happened without you! Thank you all for sharing your worlds with me. It has been a privilege.”

Described as Pittsburgh’s first contemporary studio glass gallery, Morgan opened in 1997 as a place for artists working in the medium. The website highlights various shows throughout the years, including jewelry by Karen Gilbert and Beth Williams, “unusual goblets” by Robert Dane, and sculptures by Robert Mickelsen and Martin Rosol.

Last spring, the gallery expanded the definition of glass artwork with its latest Teapots! exhibit. Shown partly in conjunction with the Fiberart International exhibition, the show featured an array of original teapots made by artists from around the world.

“While some pieces lean more traditional … others play freely with the parameters of what, in this case, constitutes a teapot, the results veering wildly from beautifully detailed and delicate to downright strange,” reads a Pittsburgh City Paper review of the show.

While the city will still have glass arts in the form of the Pittsburgh Glass Center, the closing of Morgan marks the loss of one of the city’s few niche galleries and a longtime storefront staple of the Shadyside neighborhood.

Morgan gave no reason for the closing, saying simply, “Now it’s time to say goodbye. I have many roads to travel and the time to explore is now!”
