MINDHUNTERS

Renny Harlin's thriller is a contemporary riff on Agatha Christie's famous mystery, And Then There Were None, in which a group of people trapped on an island come to realize that one of them is killing the others off systemically. The fresh twist is that this crew are all FBI profilers, professionals trained to second-guess murderers -- and of course, as fast as they can profile the unknown killer, he or she is anticipating their moves and adjusting. This chess-game mind-bend is a good premise that quickly gets derailed by gruesome death scenes, cheesy dialogue and too many red herrings. Mindhunter's prolonged conclusion is a trying assortment of fake endings tied up with a less-than-satisfying explanation. Val Kilmer has a small role as an FBI instructor, and among the imperiled profilers are LL Cool J, Kathryn Morris, Christian Slater and Jonny Lee Miller. Starts Fri., May 13.
