This is at least one-twentieth as important a problem as is the deadly dysfunction in the South Side Intoxication District; why not use the money the mayor is withholding from the effort to clean up Carson Street to fund the attempted eradication of dirty dancing?
Chris Potter: Connecting with black voters is both a moral imperative and a political necessity.
Good point. Pittsburgh's black community lacks leaders -- hell, it lacks spokesmen, champions, even recognizable or adequate representatives (such as the odious ward heelers who reigned for decades). This is a bad situation in several ways.
Carl Redwood, who is giving the greedy and arrogant Penguins (and their subsidizers) some richly deserved hell, deserves a shout-out.
An incumbent with remarkably overt support from the List-Makers received half the vote against two weak challengers. Nothing in this race -- no candidate, no political strategy, no electoral performance -- was strong. As is usual, this district couldn't win. And it didn't.
(Mr. Kendrick supported the List-Makers' candidate for county executive, too.)
Yes, the images of people being run down in the street by drunken drivers, or children being smashed to death by a guy going better than 60 on Carson Street after binge-drinking, or hundreds of public urination arrests, or home invasions by drunks . . . these images are quite a problem for the South Side Intoxication District. And for the residents. And for anyone unlucky enough to be on the road when the bars' effluent hits the streets.
How thoughtful of the bar owners to propose a candidate to identify and solve the "image problem."
