- Killa party: Wu-Tang Clan
Talking with a few friends about plans for New Year's Eve, I had to admit that mine were still up in the air. One, a local rock musician, offered the following challenge: "Can you think of a crazier place to party in Pittsburgh ... than with Wu-Tang at Mr. Small's on New Year's Eve?"
I didn't hesitate: "Nope." Entering 2011 with Wu-Tang just sounds epic.
It's surprising that Pittsburgh, and not some larger market, landed Wu-Tang for New Year's Eve. Especially because just before they play here, the group -- hip-hop royalty since their early-'90s beginnings in Staten Island -- are playing New York City and Philadelphia.
The group's original lineup remains largely intact for the current Rebirth tour, undiluted despite Wu-Tang's sprawling hip-hop empire (successful side projects; clothing line; satellite groups; comic books; everything). Notably absent are RZA (and, of course, the deceased Ol' Dirty Bastard), but that still leaves a formidable lineup taking the stage: Method Man; GZA; Ghostface Killah; Raekwon; Inspectah Deck; U-God; and Masta Killa.
The New Year's Eve show at Mr. Small's may seem pricey -- $75-125. But considering you could easily drop much more on bottle service tonight while listening to crappy canned music, partying with this army of legendary emcees -- and those who appreciate them -- sounds like a deal.
Wu-Tang Clan with Shindiggaz, Cadillac Dame, NiV, Devin Miles, The Justuce Street Poets and Arucca Flyboy. 9 p.m. Fri., Dec. 31 (8 p.m. doors). Mr. Small's Theatre, 400 Lincoln Ave., Millvale. $75-125. 21 and over. 412-821-4447 or www.mrsmalls.com
