I think one of the important points is that fossil fuels are a dangerous investment these days. We're going to eventually change to a carbon-free economy, because it's the only way to avoid drastic global warming. And, when we do, those fossil fuel companies aren't going to be making a profit any more.

So, we want to divest because fossil fuel companies are bad investments. Over the life of the pension fund, they may well shrink or disappear.
