Furry Vengeance

Eco-message and genuine humor lost in a swarm of pratfalls and poop jokes

If you're under 5, you probably won't get this silly comedy about a raccoon-led fight against economic progress, and like the kids at my screening, can just run up and down the theater aisles instead. If you're over 10, you'll likely find the endless pratfalls and repeated jokes to be tiresome. Adults will just scratch their heads at the utter dumbness of it all, as property-developer Brendan Fraser is besieged by all manner of preternaturally savvy woodland creatures who don't want to see their forest converted to mini-mansions. (Some oldsters may also just wonder what happened to former hunk Fraser, who is now a flabby, puffy mess.) Somewhere in Roger Kumble's choppy movie, there's a one-minute message about saving the trees for the creatures who actually live in them, but, ouch -- must we sit through 89 minutes of badly mugging actors getting fake-pooped on to learn it? Starts Fri., April 30.
