Crested Duck Charcuterie patrons have been buying the artisanal market's specialty meats and cheeses at the Strip District's Public Market for the last two years. Now, they can order them between two slices of bread.
Last month, Crested Duck opened a deli in Beechview. The cozy storefront shop, located on Beechview's main drag, sells meats and cheeses, but also sandwiches, soups and salads. Co-owner/chef Kevin Costa is optimistic about the new venture. "We've had a lot of repeat customers for a three-week period," he says.
Crested Duck's menu features a variety of deli sandwiches, including signature sandwiches such as prosciutto and cheddar ($6.50), made with ground mustard, field greens and tomato. Customers can also try the deli's grilled cheese du jour ($5), featuring Costa's choice of cheese.
Costa's favorite sandwich is the Spanish ham, in which thinly sliced, salted aged pork loin is served on a baguette with tomato confit. Spanish ham as a sandwich ingredient was new to me, so during my visit, I opted for Costa's recommendation, and found it as delicious as promised.
"It makes me think of my time in Spain," says the 26-year-old chef.
Not in the mood for a sandwich? Try a charcuterie plate ($7), covered with a sampling of meats and cheeses, or pate ($6.50). "I make different pates every week," explains Costa. It's no wonder the customers come back.
