- Pittsburgh pride: Wiz Khalifa, one of the night's featured performers.
After debuting in November, the CP Remixed local-music showcase returns for its second installment, promising an ear-bending collision of musical styles, from avant-garde to club jams, and nary a traditional band. Appropriately enough, the event is curated by the local musician who's risen to some fame by doing just that with the materials of pop music: mashup artist Girl Talk.
For the show, Girl Talk selected three musical performers or groups and a DJ who together would make up his local "dream lineup." Which is probably the only way you'll ever see well-known Pittsburgh rapper Wiz Khalifa on the same bill with experimental musician Michael Johnsen, who patches together numerous homemade electronic devices, "producing simple sounds, sudden transients and charming failure modes." Somewhere in between those poles, Italian Ice features live electronics and dueling percussion from two of the city's more protean drummers, Centipede Eest's Sam Pace and Paul Quattrone of Modey Lemon, !!! and Midnite Snake. Spinning throughout the evening is DJ Cutups, a busy and creative force in the city's underground dance and drum 'n' bass scenes, including the Bloomfield Bridge Tavern's long-running FUZZ night.
There's also a slightly Max Headroom element to Girl Talk's involvement: As he's playing a show the same night in New Zealand, he'll be introducing the artists via video projection. Not that he's a stranger to the camera: Girl Talk was interviewed in Wired earlier this month, which highlighted his use of "vlogging," namely, the extensive (and frequently hilarious) video diary he kept on his fall North American tour.
The all-ages event takes place Thu., Jan. 22, at WYEP's Community Broadcast Center. You'd be wise to arrive early, as space is limited, and free food and beverages from The Quiet Storm and Penn Brewery are included. The series continues throughout 2009, with a third installment in the works for April 9.
