Stop using race as an issue! Honestly I am so sick and tired of hearing "I would've if I wasn't black" I want to vomit. And you don't need to start in schools although agreed there are changes that need to be made to PPS. Why don't you start by teaching values and taking interest in your single mother neighbors and her children? Why don't you start teaching parenting skills and accountability to the parents of young black americans. Why don't you teach respect and compassion... why does it have to wait until a child is in high school? Why does it have to be society or one program or another to do the job their parents should be doing? And you know I could include mexican/Latino indian, Asian and Caucasians but you aren't so neither will I. If this young man did not meet the requirements because of his GPA suck it up and move on. He wants to go to college??? Work for it then, take out a loan, work more than one job. Get into a work study program earn a real scholarship or two. Join the rest of us out there struggling to make ends meet and yet our skin isn't black so it's tuff luck for us. When will the older black folks stand up and say stop doing drugs stop being disrespectful stop leaving your children to raise themselves stop feeling entitled, actually get off your ass and work hard and overcome the obstacles that life throws at you and be successful.
I say this because the requirements are what they are for the pittsburgh promise. My son and daughter were both seniors when their grandmother fell ill and our entire family took care of her in our home and they basically had to watch her die the missed school because of late nights my son being in gifted throughout school and tested at genius level. They didn't meet the attendance requirements so did not get the promise. I am not bitter, I didn't feel the need to write an article about it nor did they. Yes we were all disappointed because their older siblings did receive it, but requirements weren't met soooooo what do we do???? WORK HARDER!!! My son has started a small business until he has the funds to attend college and my daughter works full time until she can give college thought as well. Why is the color of you skin defining what you are entitled to and what you are able to accomplish? Life isn't fair plain and simple stop teaching your young people that the color of their skin can be used to better their life if they play the game correctly. Teach them to love, be respectful, be accountable, responsible productive members of society. you are suppressing your on race repeatedly. I personally feel sorry for these young men and women because they are brought up to hate and take because they are entitled to do so, this yet one more example of it.
