It didn't take long for someone to try to cash in on the memory of Bob O'Connor.
By Sept. 6, John Clancey, of Weirton, W.Va., was selling T-shirts on eBay with photos of the late mayor and the slogans "Mayor of the People" and "Legends Never Die."
O'Connor "seemed like a[n] ordinary guy trying to do extraordinary things," Clancey replied by e-mail to an inquiry about the shirts.
He also sells "Legends Never Die" shirts bearing the likenesses of such extraordinary people as Dean Martin, Steve McQueen, Mother Teresa, Princess Diana, Vincent Price and Carl Sagan.
When his on-line sale ended, Clancey had sold one bearing the mayor's likeness, at $9.99 (plus $5.99 shipping). But wasn't the effort a bit ... tacky?
"[W]hy is a tribute shirt tacky and a newspaper tribute is not?" Clancey responded. "Give the newspapers away and I would see the point."
