Burning Star Core plays Dynamo Sound Collective's mini-fest of experimental noise

You can't be sure what you'll get when you show up to see Burning Star Core. It's going to be noisy, and likely harsh -- then again, it could be somewhat melodic. But it's bound to involve C. Spencer Yeh, a Cincinnati noise artist who's been active for nearly 15 years now.

While Burning Star Core is mostly Yeh's solo vehicle, he's been known to collaborate with some notable names in the contemporary experimental scene: John Weise (of Bastard Noise), Carlos Giffoni and Thurston Moore, for example. Yeh is most notably a violinist, though not a very traditional one (he takes after the Tony Conrad school of drone and noise), and he plays guitar from time to time. But he's also apt to rely on guttural growls and straight-up feedback manipulation to get his point across.

Don't expect Burning Star Core to wrap you up in blankets of sound -- Yeh is more likely to assault you with a visceral noise expression. Even Burning Star Core's tamer pieces tend to have a harsh undercurrent.

Burning Star Core appears Sat., Dec. 13 at ModernFormations Gallery as part of a mini-festival of experimental acts being put together by Dynamo Sound Collective. Other notable out-of-town acts include Aaron Dilloway (a former member of Wolf Eyes who has collaborated with Yeh in the past) and the Columbus duo Sword Heaven. The show starts at 3 p.m. and lasts into the night. It's suggested that you BYOB and bring some food to share, potluck-style -- and an appetite for ear-ringing experimentation.

Burning Star Core with Sword Heaven, Aaron Dilloway, Tusco Terror, Mike Tamburo, Tusk Lord, DJ Ed Um. 3 p.m. Sat., Dec. 13. ModernFormations Gallery, 4919 Penn Ave., Garfield. $7-10. 412-362-0274 or www.modernformations.com
