Downtown workers tired of the same old bagels and donuts for breakfast can now swing by the newly opened Bluebird Kitchen, just up from Market Square. The café offers stick-to-your-ribs starters such as organic steel-cut oatmeal with coconut milk; grits with bacon, cheddar and fried egg; or sweet potato and corned-beef hash.
Stop by for lunch and indulge in fresh-made salads and exotic sandwiches (Croque Monsieur, poached tuna, Cuban sandwich with pork belly, roasted vegetable muffaletta). Coffee and baked goods are available for light snacking. (Café seating is pending, but Market Square's tables are steps away.)
Bluebird owner and manager Liz Moore Pessaro spent the last 12 years in New York City's corporate world, but she returned to her hometown with the goal of opening a café that filled Downtown's need for healthier — and more varied — options for breakfast and lunch.
And "kitchen" is more than a buzzword in the cafe's name. Pessaro emphasizes Bluebird's in-house preparations: "We make all of our breads — except for the multi-grain — and all of our baked goods and breakfast pastries." The turkey, chicken and beef for sandwiches are also prepared on site.
What does the Mount Lebanon High grad think of selling frittatas out of the former G.C. Murphy's space, now a bright airy café? "It's really exciting to be part of what's going on here," Pessaro says. "I hope that in some way we're helping to contribute to that growth."
