Cultural Norms
Hush

The publicity team at Hush Records calls Cultural Norms an album you can think to, but with its brilliantly genuine Tropocalia beats, it's also an album you can kick back and relax to. In fact, the band might have called itself Beach Music, what with its proclivity to blend unfussy jazz guitar with simplistic, breezy bossa nova. Blanket Music's vocalist is no slouch himself, and more than a few of these tracks come across as unintentional Belle and Sebastian tributes. Which isn't to say that Cultural Norms isn't culturally important, but rather that it explores territory which has been well trod before, most recently by acts like Kings of Convenience and Badly Drawn Boy. Admittedly, Cultural Norms is hardly a five-star effort, but as a pick-me-up for a city about to be dumped on by three months of snow and frosty weather, you could certainly do worse.
