The past is never dead, even as some seek to bury it. Early this month, the minister of Poland signed legislation that among other things made it a crime to accuse “the Polish nation” of complicity in the Holocaust. But tonight Polish journalist Anna Bikont visits the City of Asylum to read from her 2004 book, The Crime and the Silence: Confronting the Massacre of Jews in Wartime Jedwabne (translated into English in 2011), which exposes wartime atrocities. The work, which the New York Times called “beautifully written, devastating” details her reconstruction of events, and her own role in the investigation. -Al Hoff
