One of this busy poetry town's better-kept secrets is the journal 5 AM. Devoted to accessible, non-academic work, the bi-annual has boasted verse by unknowns and Pulitzer-winners alike, and subscribers around the world. It was founded in the 1980s, and has published continuously for about 20 years.

On Tue., Sept. 21, 5 AM holds a rare fundraiser. The attraction, of course, is poetry out loud, by the noted likes of Jan Beatty (who curates CP's "Chapter & Verse" feature), Lori Jakiela, Dave Newman and Michael Wurster. The evening is capped with readings by editors, co-founders and lauded poets themselves, Ed Ochester and Judith Vollmer.

5 AM Benefit 8 p.m. Tue., Sept. 21. Hemingway's Café, 3911 Forbes Ave., Oakland. Requested donation: $5 (includes copy of 5 AM).
