Each of the storytellers won his or her respective monthly showcase, held at the Rex Theater. At the GrandSLAM, each will tell a story of five minutes on the theme "Now or Never."

As at all Moth events, the storytellers tell true stories drawn from their personal experiences, and without notes (though unlike the StorySLAM stories, these have been workshopped with producers). The winners are picked by a panel of judges.

The GrandSLAM storytellers are Todd Shaffer, Krish Mohan, Laura Wimbels, Catherine Palmer, John Dick Winters, David Montgomery, Torrey Shineman, Derek Minto, Tristan Reid and Tim Sommers.

The host is locally based comedian and storyteller Alan Olifson.

The Moth is an internationally known storytelling initiative. The format originated in New York City and is widely known through its Moth Radio Hour, broadcast locally on 90.5 WESA-FM.

Past GrandSLAMS have been very well done — and also well-attended, so it's advisable to get your tickets soon.

The show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20-25 and are available here.

The New Hazlett is located at 6 Allegheny Square East, on the North Side.
