The festival explores "the influence of Indian culture" globally, says Trust Vice President of Programming Paul Organisak, so it features artists from as far afield as New Zealand and India itself, as well as one based in Pittsburgh. The six-week showcase draws on both classical Indian culture and contemporary work, Organisak said at this morning's press conference, Downtown.

The festival will launch with "a massive street party" featuring British-born, New York City-based bhangra exponent DJ Rekha, as part of the Trust's Sept. 25 Gallery Crawl, said Trust President and CEO Kevin McMahon.

India in Focus also includes performances by three theater companies — from Toronto, Mumbai and New Zealand — and encompasses the first two performances of the upcoming Pittsburgh Dance Council season.

Perhaps the flashiest performance will be "Mystic India," a Bollywood-influenced dance spectacular at the Byham Theater on Nov. 8. There'll also be a concert by classical tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain with SFJazz and bassist Dave Holland.

The visual-arts component (to be exhibited at Wood Street Galleries, SPACE and 707 and 709 Penn galleries) includes solo shows by artists based in New Delhi; Chenai, India; and Pittsburgh (the latter being Sarika Goulatia). And London-based Hetain Patel's show at Wood Street will be his first U.S. exhibition. (His work is pictured at left.)

The visual-arts shows will be free, as will be the Gallery Crawl. Tickets to performances have starting prices ranging from $10.50 to $35.

Tickets are already on sale. For a complete schedule, see here.
