Tomorrow is Arts Day of Giving

This online donation drive, run by the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council, is just for arts groups.

About 150 local arts groups are eligible to receive your dollars, as well as money from a pool of matching funds from the Heinz Endowments.

Thursday’s event, organized with the Pittsburgh Foundation and dubbed ArtDOG, benefits nonprofits that are members of GPAC. Most are based in Allegheny County.

It works like this: All donations received during the 18-hour event (6 a.m.-midnight) will be partially matched by a pro-rated portion of a pool of matching funds. The minimum gift per organization is $15, and matches are capped by $1,000 per donator per organization (though donors may give as much as they like, above $15, to any organization).

The roster of eligible groups includes everything from small theater companies to the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh. A complete list is here

In a new wrinkle, donors can also give to five selected artists in the Unleashed Artists Fund. Details are here.

All donations must be by MasterCard, Visa or American Express. All donations are 100 percent tax deductible.

In the most recent arts-only Day of Giving event, in 2011, some 6,200 donors gave $1.4 million, which matching funds stretched to about $1.9 million.

If you’d prefer to give money in person, GPAC reps and Theo — the ArtDOG mascot dog from Animal Friends — will be accepting donations in person tomorrow, at the Farmer’s Market in Market Square, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

The city’s Office of Public art and the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership will also be on hand to accept donations for the Market Square public-art initiative.
