Despite their country’s wealth, Americans are often reputed as provincials — people who don’t know other languages, or care what people in other nations think.

The World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh is trying to change that with initiatives like its Global Travel Scholars program for area high school students. And on Thursday night, you can hear what some participants did with their rather unusual summer vacations.

Bricolage Productions hosts Travel Tales, subtitled “True Stories from First-Time International Travelers.” It’s an evening of live storytelling by young people who traveled abroad during the summers after their junior years of high school thanks to Global Travel Scholars.

Over the past decade, more than 100 GTS students have visited countries including Costa Rica, Mongolia, Peru, Thailand, Italy and Tanzania. They’ve lived with host families, done community-service projects and more.

Thursday’s tellers include the most recent group of travelers, from this past summer, as well as several past participants.

The stories run from 6-7:30 p.m. The venue is Bricolage’s space Downtown, at 937 Liberty Ave.
