On Mon., March 3, TEDxGrandviewAve began revealing speakers for its upcoming event in April. So far, the list features some well-known and not-so-well-known locals in various fields of expertise.

“With our theme ‘Dare to Create,’ our speakers will cover a broader audience than last year,” says Kacey Wherley, founder and director of TEDxGrandviewAve. “I think these speakers are much more diverse in their careers and what they do.”

TEDxGrandviewAve is a platform for showcasing ideas, individuals and innovations that are reshaping the city of Pittsburgh. It’s one of numerous events in cities around the country inspired by TED, a nonprofit organization that hosts an annual conference featuring the world’s leading thinkers and doers.

“It started as technology, entertainment and design, and it’s become a great content- and idea-sharing platform,” says Wherley. “The annual event does really celebrate Pittsburgh and what we’re about. It’s not just an inspiring event; it’s also educational and eye-opening.”

Unlike last year’s event, this year’s TEDx will be open to 500 individuals on a first-come basis. Last year, individuals had to apply for a ticket and the venue only had room for 400.

So far, speakers include Pittsburgh native Susie Meister, a former cast member on MTV’s Road Rules: Australia; and Barron Batch, a former Pittsburgh Steeler football player.

“You may recognize them from that, but now we’re highlighting them in a different light,” Wherley says.

TEDxGrandviewAve will continue to reveal one speaker per day, except for during the weekend, until March 14. Tickets go on sale this Mon., March 10. Visit www.tedxgrandview.com
