Fundraiser includes Wine and Steeler Greats

An unusual fundraiser this Wednesday combines the arts, football … and wine.
The first annual Celebrity Wine Wars brings together retired Steelers greats from L.C. Greenwood to Hines Ward to represent their favorite wines from photographer Duane Rieder’s Engine House 25 label.
Guests will vote on their favorite wine (or, perhaps, their favorite Steeler …).
The $100-a-ticket fundraiser at Rieder’s Roberto Clemente Museum, in Lawrenceville, benefits the DreamMakers Ventures Creativity and Careers Program for at-risk youths, a program of the nonprofit Pittsburgh Gateways.
DreamMakers provides “professional creativity and career coaching for youth in at-risk communities,” including homeless kids, at workshops and summer camps focused on music and the arts. Instructors at a recent camp included such locally based jazz luminaries as Sean Jones, Nelson Harrison and Roger Humphries.
To date, DreamMakers claims to have served 600 youths to date in the Pittsburgh region. Participants are eligible for placement in internships with regional businesses and organizations.
Other Steeler greats participating in Wednesday’s event include Franco Harris, Mel Blount and J.T. Thomas.
The Sept. 26 event will also feature one-of-a-kind football helmets adorned with art inspired by the life experiences of the athletes. Aside from the wine-tasting (and voting), the evening includes lives music and food from local restaurants.
