- Single guy: Darren Little (right) with Daniel Pujol of Pujol
"Putting out records, for me, is kind of like getting tattoos," says Darren Little, proprietor of Velocity of Sound Records. "You just wanted to get one at first to see what it's like. Then you got that one and you wanted another, and next thing you know you're collecting them. It's like I'm collecting bands."
Little, a banker by day who lives in Bethel Park, has been making music for some time; his band, Eohippus, is a recording project that's never played live but has been around more than a decade. He started Velocity of Sound in earnest early this year, and in early September he'll release his fifth record (with help from Todd Stoll, who takes care of web design and some cover-design duties).
So far, Velocity of Sound has dealt only in 7-inch vinyl singles, and Little intends to limit the label's releases to vinyl only. It's part of his philosophy as a boutique label: He concentrates on releasing music that he likes, and that will appeal to people who are serious about music -- garage rock in particular.
"Anyone in this day and age who sits in front of a record player really cares about music," Little says. "Eighty percent of people who claim to love music just listen to FM radio, and they don't get it."
Singles in particular appeal to Little.
"They're not expensive to buy," he notes. "It's a medium where you can take a chance on just the band name or the album art and discover a band you might not otherwise have known."
Velocity of Sound's best seller thus far is a single from bookish Nashville enfant terrible Daniel Pujol, whose band, Pujol, released all of the tracks from its latest album, X-File on Main Street, as singles on different small labels.
Velocity's latest is a split between locals The Ceiling Stares and Virginia-based The Super Vacations; the release is also a split between labels, with Velocity of Sound and Brooklyn newbie Sweaters & Pearl sharing the credit. Next up: a single from Nashville supergroup Flesh Vehicle.
