Mark Thompson, I apologize for the error in the copy. After I visited to shoot the photos, I forgot to send an email to the copy editors to let them know there had been a change in staff. The review had been written prior to my visit and I hadn't read it, so I didn't realize the former chef was named in it at all, but I am still sorry for the misinformation. The food looked spectacular, though, so congratulations on a job excellently done!
That banging sound is the sound of the chef making the dough for the noodles! He slaps the large rope of fresh dough on the counter to remove the air bubbles. It's part of the process. When I was photographing for the story, I was startled by this noise at first, but then I figured out where it was coming from and it got less problematic. If you go in during the evening, you probably won't hear it, since they seem to make the noodles in the earlier part of the day. In other news: SOUP DUMPLINGS!!! YUMMMMMMMY!
This is one week out of 52. It seems there is plenty of time left to discuss Peduto's primary victory, his run towards the general election, and whatever else we need to discuss. Plus, I would add that CP spends all year making "more mature, worthwhile comment" (and also, some that are not so mature too; hey, it's our gift, so we gotta use it) on the state of the city and its goings on. I, personally, am glad to have had the opportunity to take AJ Richardson's photograph for this issue, because god knows, I've been covering Peduto since he worked for Valerie MacDonald and, although a very nice guy, his tattoos aren't nearly as photogenic as AJ's.
As the photographer who shot the images above, I would like to add to this piece by explaining that the images of the old furniture and the deconstructed interior belong to the upper floors of the building in which the Twisted Thistle is housed. The building is a former hotel, which the owners (who also own nearby Lingrow Farm, a wedding and banquet facility and organic farm, which produces a lot of the fresh produce served at the restaurant in-season) are painstakingly restoring the upper 3 floors of the building into a hotel. I was lucky enough to get to peek around upstairs and snap some "before" photos of the space, which is very inspiring. I am wishing them all the best in giving the building the loving care she deserves and am looking forward to seeing the finished renovation someday. It's going to be a real asset to Leechburg and all visitors to the Kiski River area, which has amazing hiking and cycling trails these days.
Also, in rebuttal to the opinion above, I found the food that I tasted to be definitely above average in quality, thoughtfulness and presentation, as well as in efforts to serve locally sourced ingredients. Chef Michael Oshansky knows his stuff! I work on reviews for CP every week, as well as cover food for several other regional publications, and so I eat out A LOT and I completely disagree with the idea that this place is mediocre in any way. Also, I drive out to that area routinely from Pittsburgh during the summer and fall to hike in the woods and I would happily factor in a stop at Twisted Thistle after my expeditious!
Mike Murphy's post election assessment was priceless. "We have a Latino problem," he said. I know it was just hasty insider jargon, but I thought it was so indicative of his party's vision of itself as separate from all "others" in the populous, as if Latinos are the problem, rather than the party's inability to relate enough to them to create any sort of faith or trust that translates into a vote. What they had was a candidate problem! (Also, I'd add that they have a vagina problem....a big one. Stupid angry broads who don't like to have guys like Akin flapping their yap all up in our business!) Anyway, at least Murphy admitted defeat and gave some acknowledgement of his and his party's underestimation of the intelligence of Americans at large, which is more than Mitch McConnell could do. What a sore loser!
