Dear Tired of it all -
Just to be clear, I never indicated that it was the school board's responsibility to transport my children to social events. What I mentioned is that, because they (the school board) do not provide buses to and from CAPA in the traditional school-bus form, my kids gain a great deal of independence from having bus passes. If the passes are eliminated, my kids will still get to school, but it will be much less pleasant for them in the social sphere, since a school like CAPA does not build neighborhood-based friendships. And you'll note that my reference to the feasibility is in that if PAT cuts routes, the kids who come to CAPA from neighborhoods all over the city will have limited ways to socialize with their friends. It's not that I think they should be given bus passes to socialize - it's that they won't be able to get there as easily if PAT cuts the routing.
Dan, you're just about as perfect a writer/thinker/arguer as there ever could be.
I have a son, and I hope I never have to deal with a pregnant girlfriend. I have a daughter, and I hope she tells me shortly after her wedding that they are expecting. But - I can't even stomach the idea that the "first kid" raised by the "first dude" gets to parade her shotgun-wedding beau now, while her mother claims her girl made a good CHOICE. She forgot that choices and decisions won't be offered if pro-choice legislation disappears?
I keep wanting to remind her of the other giant-time in US history when making something illegal prevented its use - because we certainly don't have prisons filled with people who made the "right decision" not to get hooked on crack just because THAT was made illegal, too.
(I'm not advocating the use of crack any more than I'm picketing pro-abortion, but I'll get back to you if a veep's kid ever goes to rehab...oh, wait - been done.)
